Michigan was my home and the place I discovered bike racing in the early 1980’s. I always loved riding my bike, exploring old-school hardware stores and often nostalgic for Motown, the music of my childhood and the place I was born.
I began dabbling in a variety of cycling disciplines including time-trials, road-races, criteriums and more than 40 triathlons, where I placed top-five in age-group finishes, over 25 times. I went on to qualify for USTS National Championships from 1986 through 1989 and won the 1988 Michigan Budlite Triathlon Championship overall from an age-group start position.
In 1990, I landed on an expert-development mountain bike team sponsored by the Cadieux Bicycle Club and Diamondback Bicycles. After one short race season, I earned a spot on Diamondback Racing’s Elite Mountain Bike Team. Dedication to a quality training program and skills development catapulted my amateur racing career to be named “Winningest Vet in Norba History” in 1993.
I went on to manage a professional bicycle team and over the years, discovered that you can always learn something from everyone. I’m always looking to improve, constantly searching for new coaching and training methods to guide cyclists to be better, faster, more confident riders, racers and overall better cycling ambassadors.
As a Team Manager for the powerhouse Diamondback Racing Team from 1994-1999, I guided prominent riders to podium results at premier events including 1996 Olympic Bronze Medalist, Susan De Mattie and 1996 U-23 Bronze Medalist and 1997 Under-23 Silver Medalist and future Tour de France winner, Cadel Evans.
